Spiritual Gifts: A Waste of Time?

May 22nd, 2009

Once again Mr. Coombe demolishes the traditional to make way for the truth. In his treatment of the Spiritual Discipline of Spiritual Gifts, Mr. Coombe askes the obvious, but always overlooked question, “If you’re not living a life that follows after the Lord, why are you seeking to use special gifts to serve Him?”

Apparently, trying to “serve” the Lord without following him is just a waste of time. Is this you? Do you feel like you could be serving the Lord with a special gift but something is holding you back? You think it’s the devil? Maybe it’s you. Maybe God isn’t letting you serve him yet; Maybe He’s waiting for you to first seek intimate fellowship with Him.

Hey, maybe you are seeking after the Lord and you’re ready to use your gifts. Where do you start?

In this enlightening recording, Matt outlines his own struggle to find the right way to express his gift.  He also follows the twists and turns involved in discerning what is your spiritual gift as opposed to your “natural” gifts.

Want to serve the Lord and His people with your spiritual gift? Listen and learn.

God is Looking for Rock Stars

May 18th, 2009

You know what’s cool about being a rock star? It’s like being on permanent vacation. Whether you’re surrounded by fans and rolling in cash or traveling with your smelly crew in an undersized van, you love every minute of it. Even when no one’s listening and no one cares, you play and sing with all your heart. It’s in your nature; It’s who you are and there’s nothing else you could ever imagine doing!

God is looking for rock stars. He seeking out people whose very nature is to serve others in His name. For these service rock stars, refusing to serve is like refusing to breathe. They are disciplined to serve, not out of compulsion or duty but though humility and love.

It may sound like some fantasy (like actually becoming a famous rock star), but Matt Coombe is not daunted. During a Sunday evening service you’ll not likely forget,  he passionately and effectively covers the Spiritual Discipline of Service. Colored with wonderfully honest anecdotes, this is an entertaining and enlightening message you do not want to miss. If you’re not a service rock star, loving to serve no matter what the situation, I dare you listen. You will be moved by this stirring exhortation.

Be Quiet … You Might Learn Something

April 5th, 2009

It’s time to update you on the latest in Sermon Audio fun. Matt Coombe continues his Spiritual Disciplines series with “Spiritual Disciplines Part 5: Silence“. Here the IBD vice president leads us into a land most of us are unfamiliar with: The land of silence.

Find Some Silence Everyday

Find Some Silence Everyday

With all the noise and chatter that bombard us everyday, many of us have lost track of God. We’re so distracted by music, video, phones, and other people that we never stop to consider ourselves or our lives. We listen to everything else but God Himself.

Mr. Coombe illustrates this point by asking how many are afraid when it’s time for bed. Not afraid of the dark or of sleep but of the moments of silence before the darkness overtakes us. When we are left alone with just our thoughts, do they haunt us with guilt, shame, or remorse? This is God speaking and giving you the opportunity to repent and make the right decision before the day is finally done.

It’s a great listen as Matt explains the difference between inner and outer silence as well as the importance of each. Don’t miss out.

Of course, a week would not be complete without a new episode of The Christian Worldview. In a mere hour Mr. Coombe and Dr. Fernandes flesh out the Creation / Evolution debate. They cover the most controversial topics and answer the challenging questions. This is a must if you’re curious about the controversy and want a clear, concise and straight-forward review of the main issues with the Christian answer to each.

I thoroughly enjoyed both of these and I hope you are encouraged not only in your faith, but also in your zeal to seek after God.

Spiritual Disciplines Continued

March 30th, 2009

This week, I’m happy to report there’s more good stuff from IBD.

Matt Coombe released Spiritual Disciplines Part 3: Memorization, a continuation of the ongoing Spiritual Disciplines series. In case you missed it, Spiritual Disciplines Part 2: Meditation is still available.

These lectures cover not only Matt’s personal thoughts and ideas for embracing scripture in both your heart and mind, but also relates many personal stories about his struggles and triumphs with learning and knowing the Word of God.

If you are interested in hearing how to really and truly learn, embrace, and love the Word of God, and through it, transform your heart, your mind, and then your life, this series is a must! Put in on your iPod. Take it for a walk. Listen at the gym. Just don’t miss out!

Also on the menu is “Refuting Mormonism part 2“, another episode of “The Christian World View”. This weeks topic is the third of three major issues this series focuses on.

Have Mormon friends and want to be an effective witness? Need to gently guide them through their own false belief systems and into the truth? This two part series is sure to give you the tools you need to cover the basics of their beliefs and how to remove the “stumbling stones” between them and considering Christ.
